We're going to build a large contemporary house and would like large areas carpeted. The house will be very well insulated so that there will be little heat loss allowing us to reduce the cost of space heating. What types of carpet and underlay should be used on floors with underfloor heating? Is there a maximum temperature above which the underfloor pipes should not rise? What temperature reduction can we expect using carpet in conjunction with U/F heating?
The key to carpets and underfloor heating relates to the TOG rating of the carpet and underlay combined. Underlay manufacturers have designed products specifically for the purpose which means that in my experience all but the thickest carpets can be used. However firstly you should check with the manufacturer of the underfloor heating, the maximum tog rating recommendation for their system.

Desperately need to change the awful tired carpet in living area & hall but have a yellow labrador that moults all year round !! Any ideas please !!
Unfortunately there is no better remedy for dog's hairs than regular vacuuming of the carpet. Go for a low tight pile on the surface of the carpet, this will be hard wearing and leave the hairs on the top.

Have lived with beige carpet throughout most of the house but would like to be a bit more adventurous with colour. Would something like grey/blue or duckegg blue be a difficult choice to put throughout?
The reason Beige is so popular is that you can match so many colours to it, so when laying throughout a house your décor can still be very varied. Duck egg looks lovely on the floor and will brighten your house but it is more restrictive to decorate to. Blue has a similar issue. Grey and some of the more “mineral shades” coming through in the newer ranges give you the same neutral properties in terms of decoration but a change from beige. Alternatively give each room its own colour scheme including different colour carpets. Then allow the creative juices to really flow.

We have re-decorated our 4 year old daughter's bedroom in pink & purple (feature wall), which colour carpet would you recommend?
Little girl's generally love pink and you will find a variety of pink shades at your local retailer, one of which should blend with your feature wall.

We're looking to decorate our lounge/ dining room. Colour thoughts at the moment are grey sofa and cream walls with a feature wall with grey wallpaper in the dining area. What kind of carpet and colour would you recommend. I really like the loop pile carpets as they look more modern. Would these be suitable?
If you really like loop pile then you should proceed down that route, so long as you do not have cats! However there are less colour choices available in Loop pile which tends to all be "natural" shades. The colour coordination you describe could benefit from a strong colour on the floor, a plum type shade would look very impressive or how about a "duck egg"? these would probably require a Twist pile carpets.

I have a brown leather suite in my living room with cream walls. What colour carpet would you recommend (not cream, I have a very messy two year old)?
If you wish to blend the colours then there are a wide variety of coffee or chocolate shades which would be practical for the 2 year old. If you would like to make more of a feature of your floor consider a "duck egg" shade for your carpet. The effect can be stunning and you will find a wide choice of fabrics and wallpapers using this combination.

I have a deep velvet purple sofa, white walls, and silvery wall paper on the chimney breast. It is a mid victorian terrace. I am planning to buy a charcoal/grey carpet. Do you think this will look good?
Sounds stunning. Send us a photo when it’s done!

I step out onto the garden also my two young grandchildren are here every Friday, can you suggest a carpet that will deal with this situation please?
Look for a carpet with a stain warranty. It will still get dirty but will be able to be cleaned. Alternatively you can protect in front of the doorway with a rug or plastic carpet protector.

I've a one bedroom flat and a fair bit of furniture, including a heavy piano! If I buy a new carpet, will the fitter be able to move furniture as required? There is no way I can clear a room of furniture! I have no other room to move it to.
Each retailer will have his own policy with regard to moving furniture, there will normally be a charge. It sounds like a bit of a challenge in your case. Please discuss with your local retailer.
